The apapane is a type of honeycreeper and native to the Hawaiian islands. It has a beautiful crimson body accented with areas of black, grey and white and their slightly curved bills assist in nectar gathering from a variety of flowers. In ancient times their feathers were occasionally collected for use in the majestic capes worn by royalty, but today they enjoy a more serene existence. While not considered endangered, efforts are continuously in place to ensure they remain a healthy part of the Hawaiian forest ecosystem.
These earrings are made of solid sterling silver and measure approximately 1 1/2" wide with a 2 3/4" drop.
